Steps to Enrollment with flt academy
Below are the steps for enrolling with FLT Academy. The two items that may take the most time to complete are the FAA medical examination and financing pre-approval.
For Utah residents, all other requirements can typically be completed in less than a day. Non-Utah residents may need to allow extra time depending on their state’s policies for driving records or background checks.
Keep in mind that obtaining a medical certificate may take a few weeks, depending on examiner availability, and financing approval can take several days, particularly if additional actions from a co-borrower are required.
Step 1: Schedule a Consultation with FLT Academy
Scheduling a consultation is the best way to get a personalized training estimate, have your questions answered, and explore any areas you’re curious about — whether it’s flight training, aviation in general, or the world of professional piloting. It’s also a great opportunity to make sure the school is the right fit for you, your schedule, and your long-term goals.
To schedule a consultation with FLT Academy, complete this form and keep an eye on your email!
Step 2: Secure Cost of Training
Use the estimated training cost provided by the school to apply for financing. Securing funding upfront is critical — the number one reason students do not complete training or move into professional pilot careers is a lack of sufficient funds to finish their program. If you plan to pay out of pocket, please ensure you have funding for the full estimated cost of training and speak with an FLT Academy program advisor to review the out-of-pocket payment policies.
The cost of flight training can vary depending on your prior experience, the type of training you’re pursuing, and how far you plan to go in your aviation journey. FLT Academy advisors are here to help you understand your options. We’re happy to provide custom training estimates, explain program structures, and answer any questions you may have about the training process.
FLT Academy has teamed up with Sallie Mae and Stratus Financial to provide funding for our Career-Track, Career-Track+, and Contour Airlines programs. For more information, please visit our financing page.
**Please note that FLT Academy does not offer financial advising. If you plan to finance your training, you’ll need to speak directly with your chosen lender. Only the lender can provide accurate information about interest rates, loan terms, approval criteria, and repayment plans. We strongly encourage all students seeking financing to schedule an appointment with their lender to fully understand their options.

Step 3: Obtain Your First Class FAA Medical Certificate
A valid FAA medical certificate is required for all pilots. Completing this step early ensures you meet the eligibility requirements to begin and continue training without delays.
Once you have completed Steps 1 & 2, obtain your FAA First Class Medical Certificate following these steps:
- Create a profile and fill out the FAA MedXpress Application HERE.
- Once you have completed the FAA MedXpress application, find an Aviation Medical Examiner HERE. Under “Designee Types,” select AME from the drop-down menu and check the box for First Class AME’s.
- Familiarize yourself with the medical conditions and medications that can potentially disqualify you from obtaining a First Class Medical Certificate.
IMPORTANT: Your full legal name and legal address must be identical on your FAA Medical Certificate and Drivers License.
Appointments for medical certificates may be booked weeks out, so keep that in mind when applying for FLT Academy. The cost of the appointment is not included in the estimate for flight school.
Step 4: Apply to SkyWest Airlines Pilot Pathway Program
If you’re interested in FLT Academy’s Career-Track Programs, one of the first steps is confirming your eligibility for SkyWest Airlines’ Elite Cadet status. This designation offers several major benefits, including:
- A company seniority number that begins accruing on your first day of training
- A guaranteed interview for a First Officer position once airline-eligible
- $17,500 in training reimbursements upon successful completion of training, IOE, and acceptance of the formal job offer
Because these benefits can play a significant role in choosing a flight school, we strongly recommend that you determine your Elite Cadet eligibility before enrolling in the Career-Track Program. While Cadet status is not required for enrollment at FLT Academy, it may influence your decision to move forward.
Important Note:
Eligibility for Elite Cadet status is determined solely by SkyWest Airlines. FLT Academy is not involved in the decision-making process and does not receive explanations for denied applications. If you are found ineligible, FLT Academy cannot appeal or override the decision on your behalf. However, you may reapply to the Pilot Pathway Program after six months from the original application date.
Step 5: Obtain remaining items
In addition to securing the cost of training, the FAA medical certificate, and SkyWest Cadet eligibility, future students must also obtain:
- a drug screening test
- a copy of their criminial background history report
- a copy of their driving record
Required identification documents required are:
- a valid US drivers license
- Proof of citizenship. Acceptable documents are a passport, birth certificate, or permanent residency card.
Current pilots, or those who have already obtained flight training or FAA certificates/ratings, must also provide their current pilot certificate and copies of their most recent logbook.
Step 6: Schedule Final Enrollment Meeting
Once you’ve secured all the items listed above, you’re ready to schedule your Final Enrollment Meeting with FLT Academy. To do so, use the link provided on the Enrollment Checklist or reach out directly to your enrollment advisor.
During this meeting, FLT Academy will collect your documentation, verify your eligibility for training, and finalize your enrollment for your selected class date.
Once you are officially enrolled, you’ll need to obtain an insurance policy, as required by state law. You’ll be sent information and recommendations once your enrollment is completed.
Step 7: Start your Training!
Once you have completed enrollment, you can start counting down the days to your class date! You’re officially on your way to becoming a professional pilot!
