PREREQUISITES AND REQUIREMENTS FAQS

If you’re new to the world of flying, you probably have a lot of questions. Here are some of the frequently asked questions from prospective pilots regarding what experience, if any, they need to attend flight training with FLT Academy.

Absolutely not! We don’t require any previous training to enroll. We specialize in “Zero to Hero” training.

That being said, we also can accept students who have already started or completed their training into our programs.

If you have previous certificate, ratings, or other training, it needs to be verified. FLT may review your logbook, prior training, and pilot certificate. A face-to-face review with one of our chief pilots can ensure you’re not repeating unnecessary training or missing anything.

Yes, all flight training is in person at the FLT flight school. Ground schools are also held in person, with online attendance via live-stream available under certain circumstances.

To fly as a hobby, you only need training and certification as a private pilot. To make money or otherwise be compensated as a pilot, you will need to obtain a commercial pilot license. To obtain your commercial license you will need to fulfill additional training and flight experience requirements.

You can see a detailed list of enrollment requirements and how to obtain them HERE. General enrollment requirements are:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • High school diploma
  • Pre-Approval for financing (if you are financing)
  • FAA First Class Medical Certificate
  • Background Check
  • Driving Record (MVR)
  • Proof of Citizenship (Passport, Birth Certificate, or Permanent Residency Card)
  • Drug Screening Results from partner testing facility (or other approved testing location)
  • Valid U.S. Drivers License
  • For those who have already received flight training, or obtained certificates and/or ratings, a copy of your current pilot certificate and most recent three pages of logbook entries is also required.

FLT Academy starts new students each month.  Before prospective students can be assigned a training start date, they must meet with a program advisor for a consultation, obtain all required documentation, complete their enrollment meeting, and sign their Aviation Training Agreement (ATA).

FLT Academy’s Career-Track Programs are estimated to take approximately 10 to 15 months from start to finish. This is not a “best-case scenario” or a rushed estimate—it’s a realistic timeline based on what most students have historically needed, factoring in common delays like weather, aircraft maintenance, or scheduling adjustments.

That said, actual completion time can vary depending on several factors, including your availability, study habits, flight proficiency, and how proactive you are with scheduling.

  • Students who consistently meet accelerated program weekly minimum training goals can often complete the program in 10–12 months.

  • Those who train more frequently than required may be able to accelerate their timeline.

  • On the other hand, students with limited availability or inconsistent scheduling may take longer  to finish.

The more consistently you train, the more efficiently you progress. Our team will work with you to keep your timeline on track—but your commitment and availability play a key role.
